The Vann Crossroads community is a small rural area in northern Sampson County, North Carolina. The Vann Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department serves this community with first class fire protection and medical response. The firefighter and medic squads are made up of 27 men and women from all walks of life. Many of them work public jobs and volunteer their time to this community because of their respect for their neighbors. Our department has a so called motto, “Pride of the Crossroads”. This is what we try to be to our citizens of this community and the surrounding areas. The members of the Vann Crossroads Fire Department are prepared to handle any task that may be tossed at us. Our department is 100% volunteer and I have had the privilege to serve as the Fire Chief since 2003. Currently, the department has 27 members on the roster, 24 of which are firefighters, 16 are Firefighter ll certified. Our medical responder unit has 11 E.M.T.’s (Emergency Medical Technician), 2 M.R. ‘s (Medical Responder), and 2 F.R.’s (First Responder). Our unit responds to provide medical attention to patients in our district. This has really been a big asset because our closest transporting ambulance is 7-10 miles away.
As a group, our firefighters and medic personnel train hard to provide the best service to our community and surrounding communities if our service is needed.
Our department serves 24 square miles with a population of 2000 people. That’s not very big, but it keeps us busy answering an average of 210 calls per year. Our district is a very agricultural area with many acres of farm land. We are slowly growing, and even with a small budget, as Fire Chief, I can honestly say that our department has come a long way in the last 20 years that I have been on this department. I have seen a lot of changes in 20 years, and thanks must to go to every member that has ever been on the roster since this department was organized.
The Vann Crossroads Fire Department was a dream of several men and women back in 1970. A meeting was held December 9th 1970 to discuss the future of a much needed fire department. Several people in the community donated money to help get the department started. In 1971, the Vann Crossroads Fire Department was put in place and incorporated. The department started with a 1952 Chevrolet pumper. From that we have grown to having up – to - date and some still old apparatus to do our job. Our Department takes great pride in the history that got us where we are today. Thanks for looking at our website and God Bless!
